Bug Description

Ubuntu (all versions)

There is no "normal" touchpad configuration utility present in Ubuntu (in any version). Touchpad tab in mouse preferences dialog has insufficient options: Enable/Disable touchpad, Enable mouse clicks with touchpad and Enable vertical/horizontal scrolling. There should be at least sensitivity/speed settings, option to enable fast taps (they are very slow by default) and "pretty fast" taps (Windows has taps even faster by default than when fast taps are enabled on Linux). There should be edge settings and possibility to set touchpad corners (e.g. to middle button).

Thank you for taking the time to make Ubuntu better.

It seems that your feature requests can be done through "gsynaptics" package.
You can install it via Synaptic Package Manager or
'sudo apt-get install gsynaptics' command in Terminal

gsynaptics requires to add 'SHMConfig' 'true' to xorg.conf. There is no input section for touchpad in xorg.conf by default and to have "real xorg hotpluging" I'd better not have it there. Writing hal rule is so complicated. I think, there should be rule for synaptics driver to enable SHMConfig for hal by default.

And I found, that gsynaptics doesn't allow to set touchpad corners taps and doesn't allow to set touchpad edges.

So, it appears there is now such a configuration tool since Ubuntu 9.10. Install the gpointing-device-settings. I tested this in several different systems and in Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. Once installed it will be in System > Preferences > Pointing devices and will let you configure both your mouse and Synaptics touchpad.
