Bug Description

The affected page is https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-help/mouse-middleclick.html

It says, "If you don't have a middle mouse button, you can press the left and right mouse buttons at the same time to middle-click." However, this has changed in 11.04: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyNarwhal/ReleaseNotes#Trackpads.2C_touchscreens.2C_mice.2C_and_keyboards

Instead, the page should provide a link to, or instructions from, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#A2-button_Mice , which has a solution for those who need this functionality in Natty.

Ok, I can confirm that this doesn't work for mice, but it still works for touchpads. Mice with only 2 buttons are rare these days and middle click is not needed for typical use. It looks like Ubuntu will enable the old behavior for any mouse reported that needs it.

It didn't work for my touchpad on a Dell D430, which is how I came across all of this. Should that be a different bug then?

Grant, yes. What I would do is download Ubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 which will be released later today and see if it works there. If not, use ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-input-synaptics to report it. Use a descriptive title, perhaps like "Middle click emulation doesn't work for Dell D430 touchpad".

Left and right mouse buttons for the middle click works in saucy. Perhaps, there is room for more clarity about the two mouse buttons.
