I have added this patch to the Kubuntu KMail package (via https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~blueyed/ubuntu/lucid/kdepim/329659-autoexpand-kmail-folders/+merge/23572), and it does not work: auto-expanding is still not done when hovering over an item.

Szymon: have you tested it yourself when you proposed this patch? (comment 9)
