Add tests to Combinator and fix a destructive path-ordering problem.

Combinator was re-ordering $PATH (and other path-like environment variables) for some unknown reason, and by doing so, possibly doing all kinds of bad things, including subverting the security of the user's shell. However, like other issues with combinator, this was difficult to fix because there were no tests for anything. This change makes Combinator testable, and adds a few tests, including one for the aforementioned path problem.

Allow Combinator's "mkbranch" command to work with versions later than 1.4.

Sorry for the long delay on merging this; without any tests in combinator I tend to be pretty cagey about making changes. I've now used this on a bunch of different machines for several days and I'm more or less comfortable that it works, but we should fix the test issue soon.
