Hello everybody,

when you start wicd-gtk from the shell, does it give some warning or message?

This really seems like a GTK issue: it seems like newer GTK doesn't support a MenuBar inserted in a ToolItem (that's how the "Network" button is currently implemented).

Hello,

No warning or message when I launch it from the shell but I know where is the problem. David, you told it. The "Network" button is a MenuBar and I was using an appmenu implementation in Gnome-Shell. It's why the button disappeared. Now that I don't use some sort of Appmenu anymore, the "Network" button came back.

So, the problem is : the "Network" button doesn't work with appmenu.
To resolve it : uninstall appmenu (sudo apt-get remove appmenu-*) or disable it.
Warning : uninstalling appmenu in Unity could break it.

I'm not using Ubuntu, so I can't really tell what appmenu is useful for :)

I'm reassigning this bug to the appmenu package, hoping its maintainers can shed some light on the issue.

Thanks for helping,
David

The "Network" button still exists, it's been exported to the Global Menu. So it's not necessary to uninstall appmenu to work around this, you can also use the Network menubutton in the Global Menu.

Since wicd-gtk doesn't appear to use menus at all except for here in the toolbar, probably the quickest fix for this would be to add wicd-gtk to appmenu-gtk's list of apps to not 'globalize'. That should result in the behavior that everyone in this ticket is expecting.
