Thanks Michael, due to the black hole of webapp.adapter, things work fine now - fixing that is long term and the rabbit hole I went down week before last. So as it doesn't /really/ use a participation, its all good; when we fix it to use one, it will be all good in a better way.
And yes, login() sets up a participation, so it will be fine for them, in future, when we migrae the underlying API.
